This bug was a VBScript program that originated from the Philippines on May 5, 2000. It started spreading as an email with the subject message reading “ILOVEYOU” and the attachment “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs.” When opened, the program sent the same note to everyone in the user’s Outlook address book. The file overwrites JPEG, MP3, VPOS, JS, JSE, CSS, WSH, SCT and HTA files, resets the receivers Internet Explorer settings, Windows registry settings, and also spreads through Internet Relay Chat. The ILOVEYOU Bug spread to Hong Kong, Europe, then finally the US. Within 10 days, 50+ million infections were reported; that’s 10% of internet-connected computers! An estimated damage-cost of $5.5–8.7 billion USD and removal-cost of $15 billion USD was later announced.
Who was the speculated creator of the ILOVEYOU bug? Onel de Guzman of the Philippines
